About this location
Blackpool Glen Farranee Community Youth Training centre opened its doors in 1984, originally known as Blackpool Glen Farranree Community Youth Workshop.
Initially the courses were run over a 12 week period aimed at 15-17 year olds. The centre is located in the former Wolsey Milling Building in the Subeam Industrial estate which opened its doors in 1932 until 1995. Thousands of ‘Corkonians’ were employed in the sunbeam complex at a time when large scale manufacturing factories were at the heart of Irish industry.
Since 1984, many trainees and staff have been part of the centre’s rich history. It is a 50 trainee capacity centre, offering courses in Catering, Computer Applications, Digital Media, Craft & Design, Hairdressing and Multiskills (woodwork). The centre has survived a fire in the Sunbeam estate in 2003 and a flood in the training centre in 2012. The centre has thrived largely because of the hard work and the commitment of staff and voluntary boards of management to all the trainees who have undertaken training in the centre since 1984 right up to the present day
